What is PRP?

*PRP is an autologous (from your own body) derivative of blood. The serum and platelets in our blood are loaded with growth factors and healing cytokines which are separated though a simple spinning technique and injected back into the body- delivering concentrated healing and targeted tissue restoration. Recently popularized by celebrities, you may have heard of, “vampire facials” which are nicknamed because of the ingredients, but they aren’t scary at all and do wonders to revitalize the skin.*

*PRP has actually been used in the medical world for many years to treat non- cosmetic medical issues such as arthritis, fractures and sports injuries. When the growth and healing properties in our blood are concentrated and directed to one, specific area, the results are measurable and impressive. Recently, PRP has been recognized as an effective procedure for skin rejuvenation and hair restoration as it utilizes the body’s natural healing abilities to stimulate skin recovery and hair follicle growth. This non-invasive procedure is one of the safest and most natural treatments you can have as the ingredients come directly from your body.*

How does PRP work?

*To begin, our medical specialists draw a small, 8 ml sample of blood into a sterile tube – similar to a standard blood sample. The tube containing the patient’s blood is then placed into a centrifuge and spun to separate the platelets from the other blood components. This creates the actual ‘Platelet Rich Plasma’ (PRP). PRP formulations will contain three blood proteins known as molecules that promote cell adhesion. These are: fibronectin, fibrin and vitronectin.*

*When the platelets and plasma have been removed and concentrated, they can then be re-introduced into the patient at the injured area. Using a fine, sterile needle, the PRP is injected just below the skin’s surface. PRP contains many different growth factors and cytokines that stimulate healing processes, encouraging a network of collagen and elastin in the skin. Because your own plasma is the treatment product, there is no danger of disease transmission, anaphylactic reaction or neoplasia. The PRP activates local stem cells which then begin to tighten, re-contour and regenerate the tissue where they are injected.*
*When used for cosmetic purposes, PRP may be used to treat under the eyes, forehead, nasolabial folds (smile lines), jaw line, neck/décolleté as well as deep wrinkles, to stimulate collagen regrowth. This leading-edge therapy can also be used to treat aging skin all over the body, including the knee area, thighs, arms, stomach, and genitals, making it one of the most versatile treatments we have.*

What is PRF?

*Considered to be second-generation PRP, Platelet-Rich Fibrin also utilizes your body’s natural healing abilities. PRF is a recent development in the world of platelet- rich treatments, which dermatologists, plastic surgeons and dentists enjoy using due to its ability to respond directly to injuries in the body. Although it has many similarities to PRP, it contains higher levels of the blood protein, fibrin, and specific white cells. Consequently, PRF is believed to generate longer-lasting results because its fibrin matrix traps platelet cytokines and other growth factors to release them gradually over time. PRF can also be used to form resorbable membranes used as scaffolding in facial or dental surgery.*

Frequently Asked Questions

1How does PRF work?
*Much like PRP, the first step in PRF is collection of a small, 8ml sample of blood. Through the process of centrifugation, the plasma and fibrin is separated from the red blood cells. In addition, white blood cells, containing Platelet Derived Growth Factor (PDGF) are collected. Next, a high concentration of PRF is injected into the treatment area. In response, platelets naturally find and bind to scaffolds of fibrin, which activate by distributing growth factors, beginning the process of wound healing. In turn, collagen, new skin cells, and blood vessels are created, repairing skin and promoting healing. As a result of the release of growth factors, the healing process is accelerated considerably.*
2PRF benefits include:
  • Effectively reduces facial folds
  • Encourages survival of fat cells
  • Tightens and rejuvenates skin
  • Accelerates post-operative or post-treatment healing
  • It is rich in infection-fighting cells
  • Can be used for bone repair
  • Replenishes healthy tissue, collagen, and blood vessels
  • Extremely safe and effective due to its autologous nature
  • No risk of allergy, reaction or rejection
  • Long-lasting benefits
  • Leaves no scars
  • Fast recovery and no downtime is required
  • PRF is effective on all skin types and colours
3Who is a good candidate for PRP and PRF treatments?
*If you have noticed a dull appearance to your skin, fine lines and wrinkles creeping in, thinning hair, loss of skin volume or elasticity, we believe you’ll be excited to see what these treatments are capable of. Many of our clients want dramatic results, but they are seeking non-surgical options which they can feel good about- knowing they are naturally sourced.*
*One of the best things about PRP and PRF treatments is that there is minimal risk involved. We recommend that you avoid anti-inflammatory medication and other known blood thinners for a few days before and after your treatment to avoid unnecessary bruising. As with many medical treatments, PRP and PRF are not recommended for those who are pregnant or nursing, or have medical issues. These should be discussed with your knowledgeable practitioner during your consultation. PRP can be safely done 7 days after facial Botox or filler treatment and PRF is often recommended immediately following surgical treatments to aid in the recovery process.*
*If you would like to discuss whether PRP or PRF therapy is right for you, Philosophy of Beauty invites you to a complimentary consultation with one of our experts today. Conveniently located in Vaughan, we serve clients in the Thornhill and Toronto area and are dedicated to helping them look and feel their best.*
