The active ingredient used for chin fat reduction is a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid. It’s a naturally occurring molecule found in the bodies of mammals like us that assists with fat digestion. Put simply, the treatment uses a synthetic form of the bile we produce naturally, and thus it can also effectively break down and eliminate excess fat cells where applied.
When it is injected into double chin fat, it destroys fat cell membranes. When the cell membrane is damaged, the contents of the fat cell – the glycerol and free fatty acids-are dispersed into the surrounding subcutaneous space. These components are then gradually flushed from the body.
Once your fat cells are destroyed, they can no longer return to the treatment area. Therefore, when the lipolysis process takes place over a series of treatments, the problem of a double chin can be permanently solved.

The fat which is treated is usually dissolved within 10-15 minutes of injection, however, swelling typically develops during the first few days after treatment and may take up to 3-4 weeks to subside. The most common side effect after Belkyra treatment is swelling, which is a necessary, natural part of the process. However, most of the swelling will resolve within the first 4-5 days of treatment. Some clients also experience slight bruising, itchiness, redness, and general discomfort in the treatment region. Less commonly, some have reported temporary numbness or tenderness in the targeted area. It is advised that you avoid very strenuous exercise for a few days after your double chin reduction because it may prolong your swelling and discomfort.
