What Is Acne?

Blemishes affect all ethnicities and skin tones. They are often the result of the overproduction of sebum, an oil naturally created by the body to moisturize and protect the skin. Excessive sebum, in combination with dirt and dead skin cells, can cause blocked pores. Blocked pores become infected and inflamed, thereby producing red, raised pustules on the face, known as acne.
While it is most common for teenagers to suffer from severe acne due to hormonal fluctuations during puberty, adults can continue to deal with this problem well into their 30s and 40s.
Different types of acne range in severity. Mild acne may include whiteheads and blackheads, as well as pustules. Cystic and nodular acne are more severe manifestations, causing small, painful lumps under the skin which can leave red marks and scars.
