Botox and other neuromodulators such as Dysport and Xeomin, are an integral part of many beauty treatment plans and we can show you how to get them working for you.*

What Is A Neuromodulator?

*Botox is the brand name of an injectable product produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. The name, “botulism” is usually associated with food poisoning, however, scientists have discovered a safe way to use this toxin in micro amounts to produce an array of both medical and cosmetic benefits. Small, diluted amounts can be directly injected into specific muscles, causing controlled relaxation of the muscles which lasts roughly 4-6 months. Botox is by far the most popular and well-known of the neuromodulators and is most commonly used in the beauty industry to soften the look of wrinkles and furrows on the face. It has been safely used in Canada and the USA for medical and cosmetic purposes for over 20 years and is one on the most well-researched and studied medications on the market today.*
*Similar to Botox, Dysport also works by blocking nerve signals to the muscles of problem areas. Due to its lower protein concentration, Dysport diffuses more throughout the face than Botox, often resulting in a softer look. This lower concentration may mean that a higher quantity of Dysport is needed to achieve the same level of result.  Also, this diffusion means Dysport is less effective in treating large muscles or smaller areas where more precision is needed.*
*Xeomin, (incobotulinumtoxinA) is used to treat and prevent moderate to severe lines between the eyebrows - also known as glabellar lines, or frown lines. These toxins blocks nerve activity in the muscles, causing a temporary reduction in muscle activity. Although clients may see results three to four days after treatment, full results are usually seen up to one month following the treatment. Results with Xeomin can last up to three months after which maintenance treatments are recommended for the upkeep of optimal results.*

Botox Treatment Administration

*Botox ®  is injected with a very fine needle into specific muscles. The in-depth knowledge of facial anatomy that your injector has is very important. Botox can be artfully and selectively administered so that regular facial movement is not hindered and no one will know what you’ve done- but they will tell you how rested and youthful you look! The procedure takes only few minutes and no anaesthesia is required. Depending on the muscles treated, full effects can be seen from 5 days, up to 2 weeks after treatment.*

Frequently Asked Questions

1How long do the effects of Botox, Dysport and Xeomin last?
*The effects of Botox will generally last from three to four months. As muscle action gradually returns, the lines and wrinkles will begin to slowly reappear so planning to visit us every 4-6 months is recommended. Regular maintenance treatments will mean that over time you require less product to maintain your youthful look. On average, the effects of Dysport last up to 14 weeks, while for some they last up to 18 weeks. It is not recommended to receive Dysport any sooner than 12 weeks after the previous treatment. Xeomin effects last 3 months on average.*
2How do neuromodulators work?
*These products are designed to block signals sent from nerves to the muscles. The effects will usually appear within 4-5 days of treatment and prevent muscles from contracting as forcefully. The overlying tissue and skin will then gradually smooth out and lines magically disappear. Botox, Dysport and Xeomin target what are known as dynamic wrinkles caused by repeated muscular contractions such as frowning and squinting. It should be noted that wrinkles caused by sun damage, facial volume loss and gravity will often not respond well to neuromodulators and may require other treatments which we are happy to recommend for you. Neuromodulators often work holistically with dermal fillers and other skin treatments to maximize results. Unlike fillers, which fill existing wrinkles, products like Botox relax the muscles that are creating the wrinkle itself. Botox is used most effectively on forehead lines, frown lines, crow’s feet, bunny lines, (lines created when scrunching the nose), chin, (for dimpling) skin bands on the neck, (platysmal bands) and around the mouth, (for smoker’s lines and down-turned corners of the mouth).*
3What are the common side effects associated with neuromodulators?
*The most common side effects of neuromodulator injections are temporary bruising and slight pain with injection. Although it is rare, some patients experience post-treatment headaches which fade away within 24 to 48 hours.*
*A very small percentage of patients may develop eyebrow or eyelid drooping, drooping of the corner of the mouth, or inability to use a straw, depending on the treated area. These issues can typically be adjusted with minor touch ups or will fade naturally. We advise patients not to rub the treated area for 12 hours and maintain an upright position for a minimum of 4 hours after injection.*
4Who is a good candidate for Treatment?
*A good candidate for Botox, Dysport or Xeomin is someone who is not pregnant or nursing and is in good health. Allergic reactions are extremely rare, however, previous allergic reactions to any neuromodulator treatment will likely mean avoiding other brands and formulations of botulinum toxin types. Men and women alike love how these products smooth away angry and tired looking facial lines. If you have noticed wrinkles on your forehead, the appearance of crow’s feet or other facial lines, you could be a great candidate for neuromodulator injection treatments.*
