There can also be a little truth hidden inside an outdated claim. Skin pigment does matter, for example, but that does not mean darker skin cannot be treated. Laser can produce very long-lasting reduction, but promising that every single hair will disappear permanently would be misleading.

Fact: Modern laser hair removal is often more comfortable than people expect, although it is not necessarily painless.

So, does laser hair removal hurt? Sensation varies considerably. Some patients describe brief warmth, a small sting or something similar to a quick elastic-band snap. Areas with dense hair or greater sensitivity may feel more noticeable than others.

Hair follicles cycle through different stages. Laser is most useful when a hair is actively growing and connected to the follicle in a way that allows the energy to reach its target effectively. At any given appointment, not every follicle is at that stage.

Later sessions catch other follicles as they enter active growth. That is the biological reason appointments need to be repeated rather than evidence that an earlier treatment “didn’t work.”

Myth #4 – Laser Hair Removal Permanently Removes Every Hair

Fact: A substantial, lasting reduction is possible, but complete permanent removal of every hair should not be guaranteed.

In regulatory and clinical contexts, permanent hair reduction refers to a stable long-term reduction in the number of hairs that regrow after a treatment course. It does not mean that zero hairs can ever appear again.

Fact: Shaving is generally the preferred way to manage visible hair during a laser treatment course.

Myth #7 – Laser Hair Removal Works on Every Hair Colour

Fact: Hair pigment is one of the main factors determining how well conventional hair-removal lasers can work.

Dark brown and black hairs generally create a stronger melanin target. Very light blonde, grey and white hairs contain little usable pigment, so they tend to respond poorly to lasers that rely on melanin.

Red hair is more variable but can also be difficult to treat because its pigment composition differs from that of darker hair.

No responsible consultation should promise that a melanin-targeting laser will reliably eliminate pigment-free hair. A provider needs to inspect both the colour and calibre of the hair before estimating likely response.

Fact: Summer treatment may be possible, but tanning and UV exposure require careful management.

This myth probably grew out of sensible safety advice. Because additional melanin in recently tanned or sun-exposed skin changes how light energy is absorbed, your provider needs to know about recent UV exposure before treating you.

Depending on the situation, treatment settings may need to change or an appointment may need to be postponed.

Myth #9 – Laser Hair Removal Is Only for Women

Fact: Hair removal has no gender requirement.

People choose laser for different reasons: convenience, frequent shaving irritation, unwanted density, ingrown hairs, personal preference or simply wanting to spend less time managing body hair.

Common treatment areas include the back, shoulders, chest, neck, face, underarms, legs and bikini region. The important questions are whether the hair provides an appropriate target and whether the skin can be treated safely, not whether the patient is male or female.

Fact: The device is only one part of treatment, but it matters. So do wavelength, settings, skin tone, hair characteristics and the person operating the system.
