What Is PRP?
PRP is an autologous (from your own body) derivative of blood. The serum and platelets in our blood are loaded with growth factors and healing cytokines so this part of the blood is separated though a simple spinning technique and injected back into the body- delivering concentrated healing and tissue restoration wherever it is placed.
PRP has been used in the medical world for many years to treat arthritis, fractures and sports injuries. When the growth and healing properties in our blood are concentrated and directed to one, specific area, the results are measurable and satisfying. PRP caught the the attention of the cosmetic industry in recent years and we began to hear buzz about, “The Blood Treatment” or, “Blood Facial.” This is a popular procedure used for skin rejuvenation and hair restoration that utilizes the body’s natural healing abilities to stimulate skin recovery and hair follicle growth. The nicknames can sound a bit daunting but this is one of the safest and most natural treatments you can have since the ingredients are 100% your own.
PRP contains many different growth factors and cytokines that stimulate healing processes. PRP therapy is used as an effective form of Facial Stem Cell Regeneration. Through a process of centrifugation, plasma is separated from a very small sample of blood, (roughly 8 ml) and used to stimulate a network of collagen and elastin in the facial skin. Because your own plasma is used, there is no danger of disease transmission, anaphylaxis or neoplasia.
PRP activates local stem cells which then begin to tighten, re-contour and regenerate the tissue where they are injected. PRP is also very effective to encourage hair regrowth on the scalp because it contains many growth factors that nourish and stimulate the hair follicle’s growth cycle, while encouraging increased circulation to the area. PRP hair loss treatment is an ideal, non- surgical method for treating male or female pattern hair loss, as well as other facial hair loss, (i.e. beard or eyebrow transplant.
To begin, our medical specialists draw a small, 8 ml sample of blood into a sterile tube – similar to a standard blood sample. The tube containing the patient’s blood is then placed into a centrifuge and spun to separate the platelets from the other blood components. This creates the actual ‘Platelet Rich Plasma’ (PRP).
After a few minutes, the concentrated platelets are removed and re- introduced into the patient at the site of the injury or treatment target area. Using a fine, sterile needle, the PRP is injected just below the skin’s surface. For hair restoration purposes, the PRP is re-injected into the scalp to stimulate hair follicle growth. This process leaves no scars and recovery is fast.
When used for cosmetic purposes, PRP usually treats under the eyes, forehead, nasolabial folds (smile lines), jaw line, neck/décolleté as well as deep wrinkles to stimulate collagen regrowth. This leading-edge therapy can be used to treat aging skin all over the body, including knees, thighs, arms, and stomach making it one of the most versatile treatments we have. PRP can also safely be used on the scalp for hair restoration treatments in combination with other procedures or on its own.
Following treatment, platelets gradually stimulate an increase in collagen which plumps the skin and reverses the visible signs of aging. Although, most patients notice that their skin looks and feels firmer and glowing within two to three weeks, maximum results are usually seen after several weeks. The improvements naturally continue for 12 to 18 months as new collagen production transforms the complexion.
*When PRP therapy is applied for hair restoration purposes, improvements in hair texture, thickness and growth of new hairs can be seen as early as two weeks after treatment. Natural hair growth cycles will mean that optimal results can be appreciated three to six months from the initial treatment.
The results of PRP therapy can last up to 12 months and generally, 2-3 treatments are recommended for best results. Periodic maintenance treatments will ensure long-lasting improvements.

One of the best things about PRP treatments is that there is minimal risk involved and its safety makes it a great option for almost anyone. We recommend that you avoid anti-inflammatory medication and other known blood thinners for a few days before and after your treatment to avoid unnecessary bruising. As with many medical treatments, PRP is not recommended for those who are pregnant or nursing, have a history of heart disease, autoimmune disease, asthma, fever blisters or herpes. People who have used Accutane or Retin-A recently should discuss safe timing for treatment with their practitioner. PRP can be safely done 7 days after facial Botox or filler treatment. When used for hair restoration therapy, PRP is best for patients whose hair is in the early stages of thinning. In this situation, the follicles are still active but not producing the volume or quality of hair desired.
Following PRP therapy, patients should avoid exposure to heat, (e.g. sauna, long hot showers, and vigorous exercise) as well as face washing or make up application for 2-3 days. We also recommend avoidance of alcohol and smoking for at least three days due to the affect these substances can have on blood vessels.

Minor swelling, bruising or redness around the injection site are common post-treatment however, these effects are expected and subside within 12-24 hours. The facial skin may appear to be slightly sunburned for up to 48 hours, however, there should be little or no associated discomfort.

The serum and platelets in our blood are loaded with growth factors and healing cytokines which are separated though a simple spinning technique and injected back into the body- delivering concentrated healing and targeted tissue restoration. Recently popularized by celebrities, you may have heard of, “vampire facials” which are nicknamed because of the ingredients, but they aren’t scary at all and do wonders to revitalize the skin.

The tube containing the patient’s blood is then placed into a centrifuge and spun to separate the platelets from the other blood components. This creates the actual ‘Platelet Rich Plasma’ (PRP). PRP formulations will contain three blood proteins known as molecules that promote cell adhesion. These are: fibronectin, fibrin and vitronectin.
When the platelets and plasma have been removed and concentrated, they can then be re-introduced into the patient at the injured area. Using a fine, sterile needle, the PRP is injected just below the skin’s surface.
